About SPCA Kota Kinabalu

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Kota Kinabalu (SPCA Kota Kinabalu) is officially registered on the 14th February, 2006. A licensed dog named Max, who was shot by the Kota Kinabalu City Hall Dog Unit, caused its heart-broken owner Ms Joanne DeArment to initiate the establishment of SPCA Kota Kinabalu in memory of Max and to prevent similar incidents of cruelty to animals. As a result of this tragedy and with the enthusiastic support of a handful of animal lovers, including a veterinarian named Dr Rasit Ibrahim who was its first president, SPCA Kota Kinabalu was born.

After a short spell of inactivity, SPCA Kota Kinabalu was reactivated only recently under a new leadership and a team of staunch animal lovers and activists. Although cash-strapped and without much physical resources as its only funding comes from public donations, the organization hopes, with the generous assistance and support from those who love animals, to strive and continue the never-ending battle to prevent animal abuse and to create awareness and bring about change to situations and practices in which cruelty, neglect, or unnecessary suffering exist.

SPCA Kota Kinabalu believes that many people are unaware of inhumane practices and the suffering that many animals are forced to endure. No one likes to talk about pain, suffering and death, but change cannot take place unless the facts are presented to the public. Adults and children must be educated about problems such as pet overpopulation, factory farming and animal experimentation. Once they know and understand what has been hidden from them, a percentage of these people will at least speak out against the inhumanity or actively decide to help.

For example. A pet owner will decide to spay or neuter his dog or cat. Another individual will decide to stop eating veal. Someone else will look for cruelty-free products when shopping. In a class of students, perhaps one child will remember the message and not only carry it home, but is influenced throughout life with them.

Every year thousands of animals die from cruelty and neglect. Many more have no homes to go to and left to starve and die in the streets. Animals cannot speak for themselves. They need your voice and compassion to make sure that they are heard. Let us help them live a better, more dignified and happier life. At the SPCA Kota Kinabalu, we dream of setting up a home for each of the animals we care. Public awareness toward the proper care of animals and the need for new homes for them is vital to our goal of finding homes for these poor homeless strays and abused animals.

But we cannot do it alone. As a non-profit organization, we are totally dependent on public donations for our sole source of funding. We need everyone's help in stopping animal abuse. You can make our dream come true for the animals by donating generously to SPCA Kota Kinabalu.
