:. Stray Tales: The Jumping Jake

I believe Jake is not a stray dog but had an owner, judging from his gentle character. He must have been dumped at that quiet open space behind a building for reasons only known to the cruel owner. Before I met Jake, I befriended a female dog I named Foxy (she had a beautiful brown fur and good character, she was killed by strangulation on 23 December 2008). He used to follow Foxy for meals. One night while looking for Foxy of whom there was no sign, I found Jake instead lying under a car as if he was dead with his head bleeding. He immediately got up and ran away. I was about to leave the food at the road side when he re-appeared with Foxy. Then I realized he went to fetch/call the obedient and beautiful Foxy to come over for her meals which Jake then happily shared. I learnt a lesson here! Even a dog could remember and respect his older friend and that so much so he would not eat till Foxy came together.

Jake's head had 3 big bleeding holes, and the ear was full of pus. He was obviously in pain, always tilting his head. The next day I bought from the Vet Dept Kepayan some powder for killing the maggots, antibiotic powder for the wounds and oral tablets. I was fortunate as he allowed himself to be touched and handled thus enabling me to treat him. After 3 days his wound did not really heal well so I bought antiseptic herbal spray for maggots. A further 3 days later with continuous application of antibiotic powder, his wounds healed well and he became a happy dog again. He is so thin and under nourished.

I feed him daily behind the bushes and now he has a female companion Jackie, whom I also feed. I am not sure who this small sized female is and how she appeared with Jake at this lonely place. Jake has an enormous appetite and seems to like the food I cook for him daily i.e. rice with chicken neck and liver sometimes with chicken feet.

My objective: Get him vaccinated, castrated and re-homed. At the moment he is quite safe where he is as he does not go to the public area nor is a nuisance to anyone there.
