Pet Care: Fleas and Ticks

Fleas

Flea Problems:

• make a pet restless and distressed, cause itching and inflammation.
• major cause of skin problems, e.g. flea hypersensitivity.
• they will bite owners as well as pets!

Solution: Some convenient products on the market for control come as a liquid medication that is to be squeezed to the back of the neck of the animal.

Result: Some effective medication can kill fleas before they have a chance to produce eggs, preventing the explosion of fleas in your home. However, in severe infestations, treatment of the environment can be useful e.g. vacuum cleaning and environmental spray.

Ticks

Tick problem contributes to some of the major diseases in Kota Kinabalu.

Damages: Not only itchy skin or blood loss leading to anaemia, but also as the vector for several micro-organisms which are responsible for much more serious problems involving the joint, blood cells or the immune system, and most usually with fever, e.g. Lyme disease, Tick fever. Human can also contract such diseases from ticks.

Solution: Regular anti-parasitic injection by vets (for prevention of heartworm too), regular application of spray medication over the whole body or liquid medication at the back of neck (kill both ticks and fleas).
